Information - How to dispose of unrepairable welder

Disposing of a non-repairable welder involves handling it as electronic waste (e-waste) or scrap metal, as it contains valuable metals like copper and aluminum, as well as components that should not go into regular landfills.

Here are the best ways to dispose of an old welder:

  • Scrap Metal Recycling (Best Option): Take the welder to a local scrap yard. Welders are filled with heavy, valuable materials like copper windings, aluminum, and steel cases. You can either take the machine as-is or, for higher value, disassemble it to separate the copper and aluminum, a process that involves removing outer cases and cutting cables.
  • Welding Supply Stores: Local welding suppliers (such as Air Liquide, Linde or Messer) may take old machines for recycling, as they are equipped to handle industrial waste.
  • E-Waste Recycling Facilities: Because modern welders contain electronic circuit boards, they may be classified as hazardous e-waste in some areas and should be taken to a specialized recycling depot.
  • Municipal Hazardous Waste/Eco-Centres: Check with your city or municipality; many have hazardous waste or "special item" drop-off days for appliances and electrical equipment that cannot be collected with regular garbage.
  • Sell for Parts/Scrap: List the broken welder on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Many hobbyists or repair technicians will buy "as-is" machines for parts, often paying scrap value. Contact us to see if we can use parts of your welder.
  • Educational Donation: Vocational schools or technical colleges may accept old machines for students to use to practice dismantling and repairing

Tips - Maintenance

Changing your gas driven welders oil regularly, as we do with vehicles, is a good preventative maintenance practice.

Tips - Storage

Store your welders in a dry, covered area. If you are storing it long-term, be sure to start your welder every so often to make sure it is still in working condition. Imagine letting your car sit for 2 years and then trying to start it!

Tips - Quick Check Up

If your welder is acting funny, stop using it and go through the maintenance steps to see if there can be a quick fix before there is more damage.

Tips - Consumables

Make sure to change your consumables when needed, they do not last forever!

Helpful Hints - Power

Always be aware of the power that is going into your welder. Make sure it does not fluctuate more that the allowable standard. If you live in an area with unstable power, contact us and we can guide your specific situation to protect your equipment.

Helpful Hints - Inspections and Calibrations

Perform regular, scheduled inspections of electrical connections, cables, and wire feeders to ensure consistent performance, prevent overheating, and extend machine life. Always unplug equipment before servicing.
